Old Vicarage Afternoon Tea is an atmospheric culinary journey to be enjoyed in good company, either alone, as a couple or with a larger group.
HISTORY
The tradition of afternoon tea originated during the Victorian era in the early 1840s. At that time, only two meals were typically consumed per day, breakfast and dinner. Because of the long meal interval, Anne, Duchess of Bedford, began ordering a teapot and snacks for her room in the afternoon. Gradually, Anna began to invite her friends to enjoy tea with her.
The popularity of the tea ceremony reached new proportions when Queen Victoria began attending tea receptions. At the same time, the content of Afternoon Tea began to take shape in the same way as it is known today. Afternoon tea is typically built around finger edibles served on a three-layer platter. Although the rest of the finger edibles vary, the sandwich with cucumber filling and the scones that came along in the 1900s are classics that can be found on almost every three-layer platter around the world.
Afternoon tea does not include any particular type of tea, but can be chosen according to taste. Today, afternoon tea is often accompanied by a glass of champagne or sparkling wine.
