Valkoinen Puu is a big little café chain, known for its handmade American-style cakes. Family recipes, authentic ingredients, and a passion for baking are the secrets to the cakes’ popularity. All of these things combined guarantee the cakes’ unrivalled flavour.
The café also serves special coffees, savoury pies, paninis, hearty salads, and artisan pizza.
Each day, lunch combines flavours from Finland and afar. The pesto lasagne served on Wednesdays has amassed somewhat of a cult following among our patrons. Its addictive flavour comes from our pesto, which we make ourselves from fresh basil.

A café that began with love at first sight
The story of Valkoinen Puu cafés began when Finn Kirsi met American Mark on an international dating site and fell in love. The soulmates married on their third date, and their friends thought they were crazy.
Almost twenty years later, the couple are still happy. Nowadays they live a down-to-earth life in the South Bothnian countryside with their four children. They work on Kirsi’s family farm and run the Valkoinen Puu company.
Finnish-American coffee house culture
Kirsi and Mark’s home countries are both represented in their products. The hearty American-style cakes are paired with Finnish locally sourced and organic ingredients. Some of the recipes come directly from the Mark’s grandfather, who ran an American diner in the 1950s.
Valkoinen Puu’s bakery sources pure Finnish organic spelt flour, berries, and free-range eggs directly from local producers.
Kirsi and Mark both have backgrounds in creative industries. Kirsi has experience with upholstery and interior design while Mark has worked in events organising and ceramics. This is reflected in the beautiful, relaxed and laid-back atmosphere in the cafés.
Their shared dream was to create international and unique cafés that are like a second living room for customers. Their philosophy for the coffee house experience can be summed up in the motto “Treat yourself”.
Gluten-free and vegan treats
Everyone should treat themselves! The café always serves gluten-free and vegan sweet and savoury treats. Other special dietary options are also available. Please contact the café staff when you arrive, or get in touch in advance.
