HIstory

In 1926, the parish of Jyväskylä bought the parsonage plot from teacher Hilda Festén. The congregation initially requested drawings for the vicarage from Alvar Aalto, who had just founded an architectural office in Jyväskylä. However, after seeing the drawings, the Jyväskylä church council ended up asking Kauno S. Kallio for drawings, which were later accepted. Vicarage designed by Kallio is one of the first city parsonages in Finland.

Stylistically, the building’s influences come from the stone town houses of the old Hanseatic cities of Denmark and Central Europe. The simple, symmetrical composition of the facades is classic in style. The facades are of slammed brick, the plinths are of hewn natural stone and the massive pitched roof has a brick surface. The decorative motifs are the brick moldings under the eaves and the narrow, reduced pediment of the main entrance, as well as the terrace on the side of the yard and the shelter structures. The exterior doors are massive decoratively carved oak doors. The construction technique combining the vicarage’s massive brick walls and reinforced concrete structures is typical for the construction period.

The vicarage has a rectangular two-story residential wing, a one-story office wing for the vicar’s office, and a caretaker’s apartment, sauna, laundry room, and storage in the basement. According to the law, a fire-resistant archive was also built in the vicarage for the storage of church books. There were also new innovations in the vicarage, for example the telephone.

In the planning and implementation of the interior of the vicarage, the aim was to have representative meeting spaces for the congregation and the vicar’s apartment. Architect Kallio designed the tiled stoves for the vicarage rooms. The large ceiling painting of the confirmation school hall (currently a cultural space) is painted by the artist Urho Lehtinen from 1928, and the artist himself restored the painting in 1950.

Central heating was installed in the vicarage in 1942, and at the same time some of the tiled stoves were dismantled. The Jyväskylä Vicarage was renovated in 1985, when, among other things, mechanical air conditioning was added. In addition to this, the vicar’s apartment and office premises were changed into meeting and celebration spaces.

In the spring of 2023, the facilities on the first floor of the rectory were renovated, in connection with which the replacement air ducts that were closed in the previous renovation were opened, harmful substances were removed, and the kitchen and toilet facilities were modernized. In addition to these, the surfaces of all rooms were repainted and the original wooden floors were protected with more durable flooring material.

Despite the renovations, many original elements have been preserved in the vicarage, such as room divisions, ceiling painting, tiled stoves, oak doors and the windows of the building. As an almost hundred-year-old building, Jyväskylä’s old vicarage still functions as an atmospheric meeting place.
